Demystifying de Beauvoir

"Throughout the centuries there were men who took first steps, down new roads, armed with nothing but their own vision."

-- Ayn Rand

Simone de Beauvoir was a name I've heard often but honestly didn't know much about him or her than my correct guess he/she was probably French? When I looked her up, she actually had quite the fascinating life -- from being the lifetime lover of the Jean-Paul Sartre (the famous French existential philosopher/playwright, et al) to being a philosopher, feminist and famously intrepid lover. One of her best known works -- The Second Sex -- laid bare the the oppressive attitudes against women and galvanized the "second wave"  of feminism (more reproductive rights than suffrage) at a time when these ideas weren't exactly popular (1949).

Before looking at her chart, one could smell Uranus a mile away and as with all things which permeated the sexual or taboo realm, the sign Scorpio I would guess was strong. One of her most interesting beliefs was that a "woman" wasn't born as such as was made to adopt this "second" role through the attitudes and expectations of those around her -- namely men.  Another very interesting idea was that of men casting women as "mysterious" as a way to stereotype and ultimately disempower them. If they were mysterious and thus not easily understood, they could more easily be dismissed and marginalized. So next time you're (if you're a woman) accused of being "mysterious" it may be a male's cop-out to cease trying to understand you!

What exactly in a chart indicates such a lightening-like role? Where can we see the workings of destiny … and what would make sense for a forward-thinking, convention-busting, sexy feminist philosopher? Pluto, Scorpio, Uranus oh my!? The internet doesn't make you guess for long. She is actually a stodgy (ball busting?) Capricorn imbued with the gentle, artistic sensitivities (boundary-less-ness?) of the Pisces Moon.

She has Scorpio rising … aHA! The Sun, Moon and Ascendant are the meat and potatoes of the chart, the bones of the individual character. Then we start looking at where in the chart those luminaries are placed (what houses?) and the nature of the planetary geometric relationships/aspects that are pushing this character. Where are the nodes? What's in the 10th house?

A very interesting and seemingly fitting cosmic paw print is ecstasy-seeking Neptune conjunct the North Node in the Eighth opposing the Sun, Mercury and Uranus all in Capricorn in the 2nd house. Breathe. Her permissive sexual attitudes (she was knows to take on lovers of both sexes) could be seen as the workings of the open-door policy of expansive, one-love Neptune in the house of sex. But standing behind those beliefs wasn't as easy as it looked with the tension from the cluster of planets in Capricorn across the sky. She definitely had more than a few conversations with herself about what exactly was the right relationship between duty and convention as accepted/rewarded by society (Capricorn preoccupations) and following the soulful instincts of one positioned to look into Pandora's box of sexual/taboo topics (Neptune/North Node in the 8th).
